With its unique methodology and experience, Stanford Academy provides an unmatched consulting service for students applying to colleges in the United States. Before I knew about Stanford Academy, I was extremely dubious of the help I would receive from someone I've met for the first time in writing my personal application. After all, it is true that many students who work with other consulting companies end up with applications that reflect little, if any, of their personalities. 저에게 있어서 스탠포드를 고르게 된 건 정말 운명적인 결정이었습니다. 제 같은 학교에 있는 다른 한국인들이 다른 유학원에서 다같이 한다는 소리를 들었을 때 저도 당연히 그 곳에서 하기를 원했습니다. 하지만 스탠포드가 이뤄준 제 언니의 성공적인 대학 결과 덕에 저의 부모님은 스탠포드에 대한 믿음을 발판삼아서 이 곳으로 결정을 하게 되었습니다. 제 자신도 데이비드 선생님에 대해서 조금 더 자세히 알게 되었을때, 이 곳이야말로 알맞고 신뢰할 수 있는 결정이라고 확신할 수 있게 되었습니다.
사실 압구정에서 십분정도만 걸어도 수십개의 유학 컨설팅 학원들이 보입니다. 저또한 스탠포드학원으로 결정을 하기까지 여러군데를 상담받은 것도 사실입니다. 제가 느낀 것 이것이었습니다. 실제로 그런 학원들을 운영하는 원장님들의 나오신 대학이나 흔히 말하는 스팩을 보면 정말 엄청나지 않을 수 없습니다. 다들 아이비대학 또는 그에 맘먹는 명문 대학을 졸업했다는 사실에 솔직히 끌리지 않은 곳이 없었다고 말하는 것이 제 정직한 대답입니다.
하지만, 대부분의 그런 원장님들의 전공을 보니 스스로에게 의문을 하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 똑같은 명문 대학이지만, 경제학, 엔지니어링, 비즈니스 등 을 전공하신 분에게 제 에세이를 맞기는 것이 낳을까 아니면 영문학과 철학을 전공하는 데이비드 선생님에게 맡기는것이 좋을까. 그 생각을 하니 제 마음 속에선 이미 답이 정해져 있었습니다.

많은 유학원 중에서도 스탠포드 아카데미의 차별화된 강점은 개인화된 컨설팅이라고 할 수 있습니다. 일찍부터 오랜 기간 동안 여러 번의 인터뷰를 통해 David 원장님께서는 저에 대해서 개인적으로 깊이 알기 위해 노력을 하셨고, 이는 후에 personal essay를 쓸 때 충분히 드러나 보다 더 저를 드러나는 에세이를 쓰게 해준 것 같습니다.
대학 원서는 본질적으로 정답이 없으며 학생의 잠재력을 드러내어 대학이라는 커뮤니티에 어떻게 기여를 할 수 있는가를 평가하는 것 같습니다. 그렇기 때문에 원서를 도와주는 카운셀러 또는 개인 컨설턴트는 학생을 깊이 알고 뚜렷한 주관을 가지고 원서 작업을 도와주어야 한다고 생각됩니다. 이 점에서, David 원장님께서는 학생의 개성을 살리고 다른 많은 유학원처럼 같은 유형의 원서 50, 100개를 만드는 것이 아니라 서로 다르고 개별적인 원서를 작성하도록 해주신 것 같습니다. 에세이를 쓸 때에도 단지 써온 에세이를 틀린 문법 등만 고치는 것이 아니라 holistic한 면에서 이런 에세이를 쓰는 게 좋겠다 조언을 해주시고 토론을 통해서 도출한 느낌이 나타나도록 에세이를 교정해주셨습니다. 물론, 유명 대학에서 철학과 영어를 전공하셨기 때문에 더 자연스러운 표현, 문법 등도 당연히 고쳐주시지만, 스탠포드 아카데미의 차별화된 서비스는 학생에 맞는 차별적인 에세이 교정에 있지 않나 싶습니다.
하지만 대학원서에 있어서 에세이는 전부가 아닙니다. Common Application을 작성하는 부분부터, 필요에 따라선 레쥬메, 추천서 Cover Letter 등 학생이 관여해야 하는 작업이 너무나 많은데, 이메일 또는 방문을 통해서 바로 질문을 하고 빠른 피드백을 주는 것은 앞서 말한 ‘개인화된 컨설팅’의 가장 큰 장점이었습니다. 특히 학생 입장에서 빠른 답장이 절실한 촉박한 원서 기간에 이메일을 보내면 정말 5, 10분 내로 답장을 보내주셨으며 아무리 늦어도 1-2시간 안에 답장이 와 촉박한 일정을 마무리 할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 앞에서 언급했듯이 학생 개개인에 대해 많이 알고 계시기 때문에 무엇이 필요하다 그리고 어떻게 준비를 하는 게 좋겠다라는 조언도 빠짐없이 해주십니다. 그렇기 때문에 원서 마감까지 가장 만족스러운 원서를 위해 끊임없이 고침을 반복했고 이 과정 속에는 스탠포드 아카데미가 늘 있었습니다.
사실 대학원서라는 것은 정답이 없습니다. 많이 말하는 ‘나만의 색깔’을 찾는 것이 정답이라고도 하는데, 이는 많은 경험과 개인에 대한 많은 이해가 복합적으로 작용한다면 이러한 ‘정답’은 찾을 수 있다고 봅니다. 그리고 스탠포드 아카데미는 이런 경험이 풍부하며 다른 유학원과 차별화 짓는 ‘개인적인 컨설팅’을 통해 이 답을 찾아가고 있다고 생각됩니다. 학생이 이런 경험을 단기간에 쌓기에는 다소 힘들 수도 있다고 생각됩니다. 그렇기 때문에 스탠포드 아카데미가 존재하는 이유인 것 같습니다. 여러분들도 스탠포드 아카데미를 통해 원하는 대학에 입학하시길 바랍니다.

"스탠포드 아카데미가 한국에 현존하는 모든 유학원 중에서 가장 우수한 유학 컨설팅 서비스를 제공 하고 있다고 저는 자신 있게 말할 수 있습니다. 미국 대학진학에 관해서는 최고의 전문가이신 원장선생님(David 선생님)께서 직접 컨설팅 작업에 참여를 하신다는 것은 스탠포드 아카데미의 장점이라 할 수 있습니다. 다른 유학원들 같은 경우 미국대학 진학지도 경험이 거의 없거나 전혀 없는 명문대 출신학생들이나 졸업생들에게 컨설팅 작업이 할당되어 진행되는 경우를 많이 보게 됩니다. 이런 경우 겉에서 보기에는 그럴 듯 하지만 속을 들여다 보면 실속이 없는 컨설팅작업이 이루어질 가능성이 많습니다.

Choosing the right consulting service is an extremely tough yet crucial part of the college application process. Students often hear about certain consulting services from acquaintances, but I believe it is important to actually have a meeting before deciding which service will best fit the student. I was unable to meet with the Stanford Academy staff myself, but my parents told me how the meeting went and I felt a sense of trust and bond, which led me to decide to work with Stanford Academy among the numberless other consulting options.
Stanford Academy is unique in its accessibility and availability, not to mention its excellent essay-editing program. When I returned to the States after summer break and entered the stage of finalizing my college essays and application, I was a bit nervous about whether I would be able to easily communicate with David, Christie, and Rosa via email. It was not a problem at all. Without exaggeration, David or other staff always promptly responded to my many detailed questions. Despite the time difference of Korea and the US, I generally felt that I was able to have a conversation with the staff anytime I needed their help. Personally, this feeling of having someone stand by my side and help me at any moment was a great relief and support.
Another strength of Stanford Academy is that David tries hard to bring out every aspect and detail of the student’s personal background. I remember my first meeting with David – before I started to talk, David took out a voice recorder and kept it running for the whole meeting. At the time I doubted that he would actually listen to the tape in the future, but he proved me wrong. His editing skills surprised me very much; instead of risking the writing losing my voice, David enriched my essays by fluently adding details that I had mentioned during our “recorded” talk – it hadn’t occurred to me that the small detail would fit so perfectly in that certain spot.
There are tons of consulting services, but not all of them know what they are doing. Stanford Academy does. David and his staff are talented people with plenty of experiences in college application consulting. They are realistic in giving certain suggestions, yet they are flexible and attentively listen to the students’ opinions. 사람의 마음을 얻기란 쉽지 않은 일인 것 처럼, 대학의 마음을 얻는 것 역시 어려운 일이다. 그 중에서도, 미국 대학의 마음을 얻기 위해서는 학생이 그 대학이 원하는 사람이라는 것을 원서에 보여줘야 한다. 하지만 일반적인 한국 대학과는 달리, 미국 대학의 이상형은 높은 시험 점수와 학교 성적만을 가진 사람이 아니다. 다재다능한, 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 사람을 바란다. 그리고 그런 행적들에서 그 학생의 성격과 인성을 보고싶어 한다. '당신이 우리 학교의 발전에 얼마나 기여할 수 있습니까?' 가 미국 대학이 지원자들에게 던지는 궁극적인 물음이다.
결국 지원자들이 어떤 사람인지를 보여줄 수 있는 것은 에세이다. 하지만 제한된 글자 수 이내로 자신이 그 대학의 이상형이라는 것을 증명하는 것은 오랜 시간에 걸친 미국 대학진학에 대한 연구와 경험을 토대로 한 노하우 없이는 힘든 것이 현실이다. 그런 면에서 스탠포드 아카데미는 현재 미국 대학 진학을 꿈꾸는 학생들에게 가장 실질적인 도움을 줄 수 있는 곳이다. 물론 스탠포드 유학 컨설팅을 통해 수많은 학생들이 미국 명문대학에 합격한 것은 말할 것도 없다. 하지만 정말 중요한 것은, David 원장선생님께서 어떻게 그 학생들이 엄청난 경쟁률을 뚫고 미국의 목표 대학에 붙을 수 있게 했는지다. David 선생님께서는 그 사람만이 갖고있는 장점을 끌어내 주신다. 어떻게 학생이 수많은 지원자들 사이에서 그 대학의 눈에 뛸 수 있을까? 바로 차별화 전략이다. 사람은 누구나 자신만이 가지고 있는 경험, 생각 또는 성향이 있다. 그것은 결국 그 사람이 어떤 사람인지를 알려주는 불빛이고, 대학이 눈여겨 볼 수 있는 그 사람만의 가치가 되는 것이다. 스탠포드 아카데미, David 원장 선생님은 학생을 차별화 시켜 준다. 그 차고 넘치는 에세이들중에서 그 학생 것이 제일 눈길을 끌 수 있게, 그 학생이 가지고 있는 장점과 잠재력을 100% 원서와 에세이에 담아준다.
David 선생님께서는 내가 나 자신에 대해 더 잘 알 수 있게 해주셨다. 나 조차도 알지 못했던 내 삶의 특별함과 나라는 사람의 특별함을 알게 해주셨다. 그리고 내 경험들을 다시 되짚어보며 그 경험들에서 내가 얻을 수 있는 나만의 철학이 무엇인지도 생각하게 해주셨다. 에세이 과정은 크게 두 부분으로 나눌 수 있다 – 내용과 포맷(format)이다.지금까지 설명한 것들은 내용면에서 학생의 에세이를 기억에 남게 어필한 거라면, 그 다음으로는 그 모든 내용을 가장 효과적으로 미국 대학들에게 전달할 수 있어야 한다.David 선생님께서는 그 두 부분을 모두 충족시킬 수 있게 도와주신다.
나는 아직도 내가 대학에 붙을 수 있었던 가장 큰 이유 중 하나는 스탠포드 어학원만이 가지고 있는 전략적인 설계라고 생각한다. 대학 진학이자 내 미래의 설계말이다.

If you’re reading this post right now, at this point you probably have decided that you want to study abroad for a brighter future and a greater purpose, just as I’ve been since 4 years ago, and you’re probably familiar with Stanford Academy and its founder David ssam (데이빗 선생님). If you’ve already signed up for college consulting with him, great job; don’t revoke your choice, and if you haven’t decided your mind, don’t walk away. If you do, you’re walking away from an opportunity to make your life much more successful.
Since the day I started my college consulting (cc) with David ssam. I’m pretty confident that I’ve never regretted a single moment doing it. From Day 1, I still remember David ssam waiting for me in the meeting room, all prepared, and eager to share his knowledge about choosing a college that fits one the most. Because after all, there are thousands and thousands of different higher level institutions in the U.S. that each contain their unique qualities and characteristics that might fit some students but not others. And if a student doesn’t spend enough of his/her time coming up with the perfect college with the help of an adviser, that student is bound to lag far behind in college and eventually come out more wretched than when he/she first matriculated. Thus I think benefitted very much from the beginning when I finally got to choose Duke University as my top choice school with the help of David ssam, and even to this day, I feel appreciative of his advice.
Of course David ssam’s helpful advices and abilities didn’t end there. The next step was drafting my Common Application essays and Why Our School essays (which you’ll get to know once you start cc), and throughout this process, David ssam spent hours and hours trying to elicit some unique personality of mine which made my college essays more distinguished. When I had the smallest troubles building my way through the end, David ssam didn’t hesitate to offer me advice and show how he would draft his own, encouraging me to come up with better drafts. At the same time, David ssam constantly gave me reasonable deadlines so that I could balance my volunteer work, internships, SAT preparation, and college essay drafting at the same time. With the fortunate help of David ssam’s helpful advices, I was able to finish all of my Why Our School essays for all 12 colleges (that I applied to) before the end of summer and concentrate on my 12th grade classes and extracurricular activities instead of fretting about my college applications when others were doing so.
David ssam’s endeavor to look after every one of his students didn’t end here. Even after I got done with drafting Why Our School essays and sent my essays to David ssam for editing, David ssam kindly told me he would conduct a mock interview for me in preparation for the alumni interview that I was having later that week. Even the most minute details and advice that David ssam gave me during the interview helped me do well in the actual one, and in retrospect, I think all of these helpful advices that David ssam gave me culminated to comprise a significant portion of my acceptance to Duke. I take this opportunity to thank him once again for his perseverance, diligence, (not a lot of people would want to work on weekends, but David ssam gladly came to Stanford Academy during the weekends if students asked for his help) and his passion throughout the entire cc session. If you’re a student wishing for a successful career, I highly recommend you take the opportunity to work your way through your college applications with David ssam to get one step closer to fulfilling your dreams and hopes.
